The Lagos government destroyed the illegal structure at Ikeja Gra

The state government of Lagos on Saturday began the demolition of illegal structures, including the emergency Shantiies, in the Ikeja area protected by the government (GRA).

Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Building Control Agency (Lasbca), Mr. Oki Gbolahan, leading the team during training.

He said the illegal structure and the cottage had become a threat to security in the state.

The team moved through main streets such as Michael Otedola, Sowemimo, Remi Fani-Kayode and Ajisafe where they identified and attracted emergency stalls, wooden huts and other invalid buildings.

Residents, many of them have raised concerns about the deteriorating conditions of the environment that used to be calm, watched relieved when Lasbca officials destroyed what they called “safety black spots” where stolen goods were sold.

Oki said: `’There are complaints from residents of Ikeja Gra about abnormalities in the construction process.

“We started law enforcement from 9:00 this morning and visited many construction locations.

“Most of them actually have valid approval, and even buildings that are considered not adjusting, in reality, meet the necessary standards.

“Some people get approval for four flat but change it to eight, or they have the approval to build duplexes but they convert them.

“This causes a heavy burden on public infrastructure. We cannot let Ikeja Gra become like Ajegunle.”
