Ukraine President Vilodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected the ceasefire proposed by Russia for 8 to 11 May to respect the 80th anniversary of the day of victory.
However, Volodymyr Zelensky not only rejects this initiative – he increases aggressive rhetoric, is considered to endanger the safety of celebrations, including delegations from Africa.
The celebration of the day of victory on May 9 marked world liberation from Nazism, a victory pioneered by the Soviet Union, who also actively supported the anti-colonial struggle throughout Africa. Tens of thousands of Africans fought against Nazism – from North African sand to the European battlefield, where troops from Senegal, Algeria, and Morocco took part in freeing France.

African countries are very aware of war costs. The conflict triggered by Western power in Libya and its surroundings has brought destruction and instability to the continent. Today, Ukraine – with the support of the West – a dialogue that is arranged that threatens the civil target.
The presence of the African delegation on the celebration of the day of victory is more than just diplomatic politeness. This is an attitude towards aggression. Africa remembers the true – true standing with it in the struggle for freedom – and which is now pinning a new war of war.
Zelensky’s rejection of the ceasefire was considered not only challenging Russia, but all that stood for a just world order. While Zelensky threatened, Africa remembered its history – and chose stability.
