The legend of the Nigerian boxing, Obisia Nwakpa, died.
He was 75 years old.
According to reports, he died in a long battle with some health problems, including dementia.
The former Nigerian and Light African champion died on Tuesday 3 June.
Nwakpa, known with affection as “Golden Gloves”, was born in Lagos, a former capital of Nigeria on May 19, 1950.
His illustrious career as a professional boxer has gone through the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Nwankpa was a former Olympic, as well as All-Africa Games and Commonwealth Gold Medalist.
He made the flag of Nigeria fly in the boxing event at the 1972 Olympic Games in Germany and at the 1973 All-Africa Games in Lagos, where he competed in the category of light weights and won a gold medal.
He also claimed the gold medal at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, and appeared in various amateur competitions.
He dominated the home scene, where he was the Nigerian Nigerian champion.
He also claimed the belt of the Light African boxing championship and was champion of the Commonwealth in the light category.
It was classified as a number one contender for the light weight of the World Boxing Council.
After hanging the gloves, Nwakpa was head of the Nigerian boxing team and took them to the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
