The Nigerian Guild of the publishers (NGE) expressed deep pain for the killing of Somochukwu Chriselle Maduagwu, an anchor of news and journalist with Arise News Channel, who was assassinated during an armed robbery attack in his residence in Katami, Abuja.
In a declaration signed by its president, Eze Anaba and the general secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the guild described Maduagwu as a promising journalist who embodied the future of the profession in Nigeria.
“For the premature death of Somochukwu, journalism has lost not only a good professional who has committed himself to shedding light on important issues and giving voice to the voiceless, but also of one who represented the future of journalism in the country”, reads the note.
The guild observed that the accident underlines the growing insecurity throughout the country, with the Nigerians who live more and more in fear due to armed robberies, kidnapping, bandits, insurrection and other violent crimes.
“We ask actions by the government to face the causes at the root of insurviousness and adopt measures to ensure the safety of all citizens. We ask that those responsible for the death of Somochukwu are confirmed by the safety agencies and faced the entire weight of the law,” said NGE.
While commissioning Arise’s news and the wider media industry, the guild invited journalists to draw inspiration from Maduagwu’s commitment for excellence despite the challenges.
“May the memory of this vibrant journalist be a blessing for all those who knew it,” concluded the declaration.
