The Nigerian government increases 38 technical universities to improve the development of adolescent skills

The federal government has announced a large reshuffle from 38 technical universities throughout Nigeria as part of an effort to equip Nigerian young people with highly sought -related vocational and technical skills.

Minister of Education Dr. Tupi Alausa revealed this during 2025 quarterly citizens and the involvement of stakeholders at the Nigerian Educational Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) held in Abuja on Monday.

The minister said that the increase was part of a broader reform to the transition of the Nigerian education system to a skill -based economy, which was driven by knowledge. The involvement session focuses on strategic priorities, including overcoming the crisis of children outside of state schools and improving the quality of education.

Alausa outlines six main reform areas:

-Reducing the number of girls outside of school

– Strengthening the quality assurance mechanism

– Expanding access through targeted programs

– Apply curriculum reform

– Increase digital literacy

– Improve teacher training

The main spotlight is the introduction of a dual training model in technical tertiary institutions, where students will spend 80% of their time in practical workshops and only 20% in traditional classrooms.

“Craftsmen will be paid for the training mentors, building a new value chain in the education sector,” said Alausa. “Our goal is to train 5 million Nigerian young people with global relevant skills within four years.”

The Minister paints a gloomy picture of the current Nigerian education landscape, with 15 million children outside of school and more than 45 million which are classified as “poor learning”-can not read or understand basic texts. Teenage girls remain very vulnerable, with 6 million aged 12-19 now outside of school.

Through Nesri’s intervention, the government already has:

-25,000 children outside of school are integrated into formal education

– Train 4,000 Tsangaya teachers (Qur’anic School) to support inclusive learning

In a step to modernize the assessment system, Alausa announced that Neco and WAEC would start computer -based testing starting in November 2025, with full digitalization of all national examinations including Jamb in 2027.

“Nesri discusses the issue of access, quality, inclusiveness, research, and professional development in education,” the Minister stressed. “This comprehensive approach will help the transition of Nigeria from a resource -based economy to an economy driven by knowledge.”

The increase came when Nigeria tried to harmonize his education system with the demands of the labor market and reduce the unemployment of young people through the acquisition of practical skills.
