The federal government has announced the launch of the revised elementary and senior school curriculum, following what is described as a broad consultation with stakeholders throughout the country.
The Federal Ministry of Education revealed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Director of the Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.
According to the statement, the review exercise was spearheaded by the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) under the supervision of the ministry, and was guided by a competency -based approach and results based on the aim of strengthening the school system.
Boriowo emphasized that reforms were not in a hurry but were carried out through “process after step and participatory processes” designed to ensure inclusiveness, national ownership, and global relevance.
“The journey begins with the assessment of national needs in 12 states to identify gaps in the system. This is followed by dialogue in six geopolitical zones, where students, teachers, parents, civil society groups, entrepreneurs, religious and traditional leaders, policy makers, and development partners all contribute their perspectives,” the statement was read.
He explained that input from stakeholders informed the new curriculum framework, which was officially ratified at the 68th National Council meeting held on October 10, 2024. The meeting, which was chaired by the Ministers of Education, was attended by the Commissioner of Education, the Chair of the Subeb, the Professional Association, the Civil Society Organization, and the Development Partner.
Curriculum design and development, records Boriowo, involving subject specialists, teacher educators, industrial practitioners, and national curriculum experts. This process follows four stages: selection of content and standardization, preparation, criticism and improvement, and final editing.
Since receiving approval from the National Education Council, the Ministry has begun gradual implementation for the past nine months. This includes piloting in certain schools, teacher orientation, and national training that is delivered physically and virtually to prepare educators for effective class delivery.
“The revised curriculum combines competencies and results -based approaches to equip students who are better for current and future challenges. They are designed to meet the priority of Nigeria’s development while in harmony with international standards,” Boriowo said.
He added that the revised curriculum details were available on the Nerdc website (www.herdc.gov.ng), ensuring that implementation would continue to be smooth in all schools nationally.
