The Nigerian government launched Bisonfly to secure a discount air trip for Civil Servants

The federal government has launched a Bisonfly project, a new initiative designed to significantly reduce air travel costs for civil servants in all ministries, departments and institutions (MDA).

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, the Bisonfly project will operate through a centralized, optimized and driven discount system. This system aims to streamline the process of regulating air travel for government agencies.

Speaking at the launch of the project in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Coordinating Economics, Mr. Wale Edun, described Bisonfly as a strategic initiative developed by the Federal Ministry of Finance. He stressed that this project was a direct response to the government’s commitment to reducing expenses by utilizing the strength of joint negotiations to secure lower airplane tickets for civil servants.

“This initiative supports our commitment to responsible financial management,” said Edun. “By centralizing travel bookings and securing discount rates, we aim to reduce costs and increase service delivery, similar to practices adopted by international organizations such as the World Bank.”

The Bisonfly system will use a digital ordering tool and a centralized platform to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in official travel arrangements. This platform is anticipated to operate fully in the next few months.

The Minister also accused the project implementation team with the responsibility of ensuring the success of the implementation of this vital government initiative, underline the importance of meeting the deadline and achieving the results that can be proven.

Raymond Omenka Omachi, permanent secretary, special task, the Federal Ministry of Finance, praised the Bisonfly project as “a model for fiscal responsibilities in public services, with the potential for broader applications outside of government operations.”

This project is understood and developed by the Ministry’s Efficiency Unit, in collaboration with ICT specialists and other related stakeholders. The dedicated team has been established to oversee the launch of the program and ensure it provides a real increase in the overall cost and operation of the public sector.
