The Nigerian government withheld compensation payments for the Lagos-Calabar project

The Federal Government has withheld compensation payments to property owners on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project due to changes in plans.

Public Works Minister Dave Umahi disclosed this while inspecting the ongoing work on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other road projects in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Dangote Tax Credit Belt and Eleko on Saturday in Lagos.

The minister said the government had reduced the entire corridor from Phase Two, Part Two of the coastal route to an effective 55km of pavement, including 10 railway lines.

He added that the government had so far released about N10 billion as compensation.

Umahi said: “We will withhold compensation payments from Kilometer Seven because we have rerouted some parts, such as the white sand beach.

“I know the indigenous people have prayed well. I think God has answered their prayers because we have also compressed the corridor into 55 effective sidewalks with 10 train lines.

“We reduced 10 lanes from 55 to 20, and we also brought them back at the start of this project.”

The minister said compensation payments would resume after the review.

“For Section Two, we will have new enumerators so they can also give us their opinions.

“It’s going to be very, very fast.

“We saved all those cables and saved the entire Okunaja community, not just by rerouting but completely rerouting through the swamp.

“I heard some people calling out in protest that we were changing the route to the swamp, that we should go to the gazetted place and then destroy the cables.

“I wonder what kind of people we are dealing with. It is very funny.

“I’m sure they will see very reasonable reasons,” he said.
