Governors elected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged party members and supporters to remain calm as the country awaits a landmark ruling from the Nigerian Court of Appeal on Monday regarding the ongoing party leadership dispute.
The decision is widely seen as a watershed moment for the opposition party, which has been grappling with internal strife for months as it tries to stabilize its structure and prepare for general elections in 2027.
The call for restraint was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the People’s Democratic Party Governors Forum. The forum was chaired by Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, and the statement was signed by its Director General, Emmanuel Agbo.
“We are at a defining moment for our democracy. The judiciary, as the guardian of justice, has the responsibility to ensure fairness, impartiality and maintain national stability.
“Whatever the decision, the PDP reiterates its respect for the judicial process and its commitment to peace.
“We urge our members, supporters and all Nigerians to remain calm and disciplined in reacting to the decision. Our collective response must reflect maturity and deep respect for the rule of law.

“We call on all party members and leaders to show maximum restraint, remain calm and law-abiding before, during and after the decision as the leaders will soon meet to review the decision and map out the necessary actions post the decision.
“Democracy thrives on diversity of voices, competition of ideas, and the ability of citizens to choose credible alternatives.
“Therefore, we call on members who wish to contest the 2027 elections to believe in the party platform,” said the governor.
Despite differences of opinion within the party, the governors stressed that the PDP continues to play an important role in the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The PDP has always been the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic journey. Our party has governed, challenged and contributed to the strengthening of institutions that protect the rights of citizens.
“As we approach the 2027 elections, the PDP remains steadfast in its mission to provide a strong, credible and Nigerian people-centric alternative.
“No decision can erase the will of the Nigerian people for a fair and competitive political system. We are ready to fully participate in the democratic process, ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and respected.”
“The judiciary has always been the only impartial and people-oriented government institution whose tireless defense of the constitution has ensured the stability of our democratic government,” the governors added.
The decision expected by the appeals court on Monday is likely to determine the course of the party’s internal rivalries and influence its preparations for the next stage in Nigeria’s political cycle.
