A high state court of Lagos, chaired by judge Sherifat Sonaike in the square of Tafawa Balewa, sentenced Benjamin Ogononero to death by hanging the gruesome murder of his wife, Chinyere Ogononero, and his brother, Ifeanyi Joseph, in April 2022.
The Court found that Ogononero guilty of having set fire to both victims as they slept in their home in Abule Ado, Lagos, following a heated domestic controversy.
Driving the judgment, Thursday, judge Sonaike established that the accusation had proven to be beyond any reasonable doubt that Ogononon had deliberately planned and conducted the attack.
Describing the act as “evil of the highest order”, the judge condemned his actions as one of the most atrocious crimes that a person could commit.
During the judicial proceedings, judge Sonaike stressed that the evidence presented showed beyond any reasonable doubt that Ogononono committed the atrocious act.
βHe created, prepared and performed the act. This is evil of the highest order, “said the judge, condemning the accused’s actions as one of the worst that one person could inflict on another.
In addition to the murder accusation, Ogonero was also declared guilty of arson and sentenced to life imprisonment, which will start from the sentence date
The judicial group, led by the director of the judicial public (DPP) Martins Babajide, argued that the man had been angry for the fact that his wife owned the house in which they lived, that he had purchased while working in the banking sector.
This anger, it was said, was a key factor in his decision to commit crime.
Witnesses described the horrible scene, with a testimony that Chinyere’s body was so seriously burned that its limbs fell.
Ifeanyi Joseph died of serious burns who caused his body to stop circulating blood.
The court also heard from a neighbor who saw Ogononero run from the house on fire with a fuel gallon, further consolidating his involvement in crime.
It was said that Chinyere had just returned from Scotland when the accident took place.
Ogononon’s anger was said to be derived from the fact that the house they built was recorded on behalf of Chinyere.
Ogonon discovered it when he suddenly returned from Scotland and made an attempt to sell the building but did not succeed due to the name on the documents. It was said he had been furious.
When his wife learned of the attempt to sell the house, he returned to Nigeria just to meet his death that same night.
Ogononon’s actions were considered guided by personal grievances and anger, with the court that did not find remorse during the trial.
They were married to four children.
