Nigeria’s police forces have announced a special exercise of the departmental selection commission for the inspectors who were recruited in 2000 and were not promoted to the degree of police superintendent assistant (ASP), learned Saharareporters.
A document dated May 5, 2025 and signed by Aig Fom Pam Joseph, secretary of force, on behalf of the police inspector, has announced the move for some time.
The Directive, which was sent to all general police inspectors, general police inspectors in 17 areas, police commissioners at national level and commanders of all police training institutions, instructs that the interview exercise is conducted between 19 and 30 May 2025.

This announcement arrives in a growing frustration among the rank officers and files, some of which have spent years blocked in the same rank despite meeting all the requirements for promotion.
The reports also focused on how some discontented officers of the Nigerian police had raised the alarm for what they described as a systemic exclusion of basic officers from the progression of the career in strength, following the cancellation of the Advanced Studies Command (Ascon) program.
The Ascon is a path once available for graduation and HND owners who entered the force using their senior secondary certificate examination (SSCE).
In exclusive interviews with Saharareporter, the officers – initially recruited in force with SSCE qualifications, but who later obtained their university degree – made their hope of career advancement.
According to one of the officers who spoke to Saharareporter, once the Nigeria police forces had a clear path for the progress of the career through the Ascon program, in particular for the officers who joined SScne but later they acquired higher qualifications such as HCNS or Degree University.
Based on the old system, these officials could request an ascon training and, upon completion successfully, they were automatically promoted to the degree of police superintendent assistant (ASP).
