●While the judiciary condemns the shooting
Last Thursday a magistrate was killed at the Makadara court in Nairobi county.
A few hours later, the Judiciary condemned the killing of the magistrate.
The magistrate was killed for revoking the policeman’s wife’s bail.
In a statement, the judiciary said it was strengthening safety protocols for all civilians visiting courts across the country and assured all judicial officers of their safety while carrying out their duties.
Winfrida Mokaya, who signed the document in her capacity as Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, further revealed that the incident occurred after the magistrate canceled the bond of a suspect whose case he was handling.
Initial information indicates that the suspect is the police officer’s wife.
“During today’s public hearing, the magistrate canceled bail and failed to offer satisfactory explanations for the bail jumping. Immediately after pronouncing this decision, a person shot the magistrate, wounding her next to her,” the statement read.
Mokaya called for calm, reiterating that the police have started in-depth investigations into the matter.
The judiciary also confirmed that the police officer who shot the magistrate was shot by other police officers immediately after shooting the magistrate.
The judiciary issued the statement after the incident which captured national attention after the news broke.
Reports indicated that the police officer opened fire while the chief magistrate was conducting the court hearing. She is said to have shot her, causing serious injuries.
The accident interrupted Thursday’s work, bringing operations to a halt.
The magistrate and another civilian injured during the incident were rushed to hospital for specialist treatment.
The police, who arrived at the court shortly after, shifted the body of the deceased to the local mortuary where it will be preserved before the autopsy is carried out. [kenyans.co.ke]
