The Presidency has responded to Labor presidential candidate Peter Obi’s criticism of the Federal Government’s plans to purchase new aircraft for the presidential fleet, calling his comments “insensitive” and wondering if he would rather have the President’s life threatened for flying a damaged aircraft.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said: “Does Peter Obi want the President dead? Was that his wish? Does he want him to keep moving around in rickety and lifeless planes like the Vice President of Malawi and the President of Iran? Let him tell us. This is the basic thing any sane government would do. You can’t play with the welfare of your President.”

Onanuga added that the current plane was purchased more than 20 years ago and experienced problems forcing the President to travel on a commercial airline from Saudi Arabia to England. He stated that the National Assembly had recommended replacing the aircraft, and that it was not a luxury but a necessity.
The document recalls that Peter Obi described the plan as “unacceptable” and “insensitive” to the plight of the Nigerian people, citing the economic crisis and poverty in the country.
But the Presidency rejected his comments as “unnecessary” and “shameless”.
