Kayode Opeifa

The CEO of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, apologized to the union of Nigeria journalists (Nuj) for a recent altercation with the Union.

Opeifa, in an exclusive telephone interview with the Nigeria (Nan) news agency on Saturday in Abuja, said he had “made the necessary” in response to Nuj’s application.

Nan recalls that the Nuj’s FCT council, in a declaration signed by his secretary, Jide Oyekunle, sentenced the alleged harassment, intimidation and verbal abuses accepted in Ladi Bala da Opeifa.

Bala, correspondent of transport with the Nigerian television authority (NTA), Abuja, is also the past president of the Nigerian association of journalists.

According to reports, he was attacked on Wednesday while he covered the consequences of the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train.

Opeifa, however, told Nan that he had apologized for the accident, saying that he remained a friend of the media.

According to him, he has always identified himself as a trade unionist, having participated in the activities of the Union and Human Rights both in the academic world and in other spheres of activism.

“My position is not to face the problem because it involves Nuj, an organization that I once part, fought, fought and loved.

“The Nuj FCT Council has even given me a prize in the past.

“I am a friend of Nuj and other unions and I have journalist friends throughout the country, including a former Minister of Information and Culture, among many others.

“Nuj asked me for apologies and, as a friend of the house, I apologize for what happened and I take full responsibility for me,” he said.

Opeifa added that he would not “dissipate more energy” discussing the matter, underlining that his attention remained on his national assignment in line with the renewed agenda of the hope of President Bola Tinubu.

“Yesterday at the villa, I did what the others thought I wouldn’t have done – I publicly apologized to the Nuj.

“I was also in contact with several media leaders who contacted me.

“They asked for excuses and I gave it. I am leaving the rest to God, humanity and humanity.

“I want to stay focused on my assignment,” said Opeifa.
