The Red Cross Mobilizes Aid Efforts Because Floods that Destroyed Killing Scores in Niger

Nigeria Red Cross Society has stated a deep sadness after a flood of disasters that destroyed KPEGE-Mokwa in the Mokwa Regional Government in the Niger state in the early Thursday, May 29.

The initial report placed the death toll at the age of 21, but the latest update now estimates more than 100 deaths, with more residents who have not been counted.

In a statement issued Friday, the humanitarian organization described the incident as “heartbreaking,” underline the scale of human destruction and suffering.

“Heavy rain starts around 3 am while most of the population is still asleep, causing the loss of lives that suddenly and tragic and family transfer,” the statement said.

The Red Cross confirmed the recovery of 21 bodies but warned that the number of victims was expected to increase with rescue efforts. Volunteers from the organization actively work on disaster sites, provide first aid that saves lives and helps in the ongoing search and rescue operation.

“Our volunteers are on the ground, offering critical support to survivors and helping to find those who are still missing,” said the Red Cross. “We remain committed to supporting the initiative led by the government and working with local authorities to provide emergency assistance.”

When the rescue operation increased, the Red Cross expressed his condolences that touched the heart to the family who lost the loved one, and conveyed the message of unity and hope.

“We convey our deepest sympathy to the grieving families. During these difficult times, we stand with the KPEGE-Mokwa people and will continue our humanitarian work to bring assistance to the affected community.”

Tragic floods once again highlighted the vulnerability of river communities and lowlands in the state of Niger. Seasonal rainfall, inadequate drainage systems, and poor flood management infrastructure continue to pose a significant risk of life and property in the region.

The Ball President Ahmed Tinubu also responded quickly to the tragedy, describing the incident as “national tragedy.” In a statement released Thursday, he directed an emergency agent to mobilize without delay.

“We must do all our power to help the victims and prevent further loss of lives,” the President said.
