The Senate confirmed Abubakar-Sadiq as national commissioner of INEC

The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq (rtd) as National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the North East.

This follows the adoption of the Senate Committee on Elections report submitted by its Chairman, Simon Lalong. at the plenary session in Abuja.

Lalong, while submitting the report, said the committee screened the candidates after receiving resumes and other relevant documents.

He said after considering his level of exposure, experience, performance, qualifications and integrity, the committee recommended his confirmation by the Senate as INEC national commissioner representing the North East.

The Senate also confirmed the appointment of Usman Dakingari as non-career ambassador and Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the Nigerian National Hajj Commission (NAHCON).

Their confirmation followed the adoption of the Foreign Affairs Committee report following its presentation by the Chairman, Senator Bello Abubakar.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, after the confirmation, commended the committee for their input and expressed confidence that the new INEC national commissioner would add value to Nigeria’s electoral system.

Akpabio also thanked President Bola Tinubu for appointing a woman to the position.

“I thank the committee for the way and manner they took the time to screen these nominees and present them today.

“I also congratulate the nominees and hope that their efforts bear fruit in their various assignments.

“And I thank Mr President for finding the right people for the right appointments. Congratulations to everyone,” said Akpabio.
