Nigeria has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cup of Nations of Africa U-20 2025 after a hard 2-2 draw against Kenya in its last group B game on Wednesday on June 30 of the June Air Defense Stadium in Cairo.
The objectives of striker Kparobo Arierhi and Captain Daniel Bameyi assured that the Nigerians collected the crucial point necessary to seal the qualification.
The result sees the Flying Eagles finish second in the group with five points, behind Morocco, who assured first place with seven points after a 3-1 victory over Tunisia.
Aliyu Zubairu’s team entered the clash knowing that a draw would be enough to progress, but were forced to work for it by an energetic team of Kenya already eliminated from the tournament.
Kenya took an early advantage only six minutes in the game when Kevin Injehu became from the penalty spot after a defensive error.
However, Nigeria responded quickly. In the 13th minute, Arierhi clung to a ball through the ball and ended calmly beyond Kenya’s advance to level the score.
Arierhi almost doubled his account four minutes later, but his effort was well saved.
At the other extreme, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was called to action, stopping an excellent stop to deny the Kenya a second goal before the break.
Kenya restored her advantage in the 68th minute when William Gitama touched a low crossing of a piece established in the back post, silencing the Nigerian bank.
But only four minutes later, the Flying Eagles responded once more. A fault inside Kenya gave Nigeria a penalty, which Bameyi turned with confidence to put the 2-2.
The draw sees Nigeria progress to the quarterfinals of undefeated final, with a victory and two draws.
However, the game also scored the first time they granted in the competition.
Tunisia, who finished third with three points, will now wait to see if they qualify as one of the best third -place teams.
According to the CAF calendar, Nigeria, as a finalist of Group B, will face the second place team in group C in the quarterfinals.
