The US cursed a ban on Nigerian imports, quoting “lost income” for the American business

United States Trade Representatives (USTR) have publicly criticized the ban on Nigerian imports in 25 categories of goods, with the reason that this restriction significantly hampered market access for American exporters.

The criticism followed the imposition of a 14 percent tariff on Nigerian exports to the US by President Donald Trump.

The USTR’s statement highlighted the adverse effects of Nigerian import ban in several sectors, including agriculture, medicines, drinks, and consumer goods. “The prohibition of Nigerian imports in 25 different product categories has an impact on US exporters, especially in agriculture, medicines, drinks, and consumer goods,” the agent said through his X -grip.

In particular, the USTR refers to restrictions on items such as beef, pork, poultry, fruit juice, medicines, and alcoholic drinks. “Restrictions on goods such as beef, pork, poultry, fruit juice, medicines, and spirits limit US market access and reduce export opportunities,” the agency stressed.

The agency believes that this policy not only limits export opportunities for US businesses but also results in substantial income losses. “These policies create significant trading barriers that cause loss of income for US businesses that want to develop in the Nigeria market,” Ustr explained.

Nigeria applied a ban on imports on these 25 items in 2016 as an action to control imports and stimulate domestic production. Prohibited goods include various items, including poultry, pigs, processed vegetable oils, sugar, cocoa products, spaghetti, beer, and certain medicines.

In addition, on March 26, 2025, the Federal Nigerian government announced plans to further limit imports by stopping the import of solar panels to promote local manufacturing as part of its net energy initiative.
