There is no court order that mandates the return of Natasha – Senate to warn the deferred parliamentary members to respect the legal process

The Nigerian Senate has issued a company warning to suspend the Natasha Akpoti-Uuduaghan senator, urged him to respect the legislative procedures and refrain from efforts to continue their duties in the National Assembly before the suspension was officially appointed.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee for the media and public affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, denied the claim that the court had ordered the recovery of parliamentary members representing the Kogi middle senatorial district.

“The senate wants to reiterate, for the third time, that there is no court order mandating the senate to remember the Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan senator before the end of his suspension,” Adaramodu said.

The clarification emerged in the middle of the report that the Akpoti-Uuduaghan senator plans to return to the plenary on Tuesday, quoting the decision of the Federal High Court recently by Judge Binta Nyako.

However, Senator Adaramodu explained that the court did not issue directions that forced the Senate to return it, but only offer the opinion of advisors who show that the legislative body can consider reviewing standing orders and evaluating the length of the suspect.

“Instead of issuing compulsory orders for withdrawal, an honorable court gave an advisor. He also found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of the humiliation of the court and imposed a fine of 5 million, along with direction to issue public apologies in two national dailies and on his Facebook page.

Adaramodu stressed that court opinions did not cancel the authority of the Senate discipline and reiterated that the room had acted in its constitutional rights.

He warned that any unauthorized effort by the Akpoti-Uuduaghan senator to continue the legislative task under the pretext of being misinterpreted would be considered a challenge for the authority of the senate and abuse of legal interpretation.

“The senate emphasized once again: there were no orders to be upheld to lead back to his room,” he said.

Adaramodu concluded by stating that the senate would review a court adviser in the future and make decisions in accordance with legislative norms.

Until then, the Senate has asked the Akpoti-Uuduaghan senator to respect the institution and uphold the rule of law.

“Stay away from the senate room and let the legal process to run a full course,” Adaramodu advised.
