The Nigerian transmission company (TCN) on Friday confirmed the collapse of three high-voltage transmission towers after the storm’s induced incident along the 330KV West-Osogbo Ikeja path, which resulted in loss of 165 megawatpe electricity.
According to a statement issued by the general manager of the company’s public affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the incident occurred at around 21:22 on Wednesday, April 2, at a point about 14.9 kilometers from the West Ikeja transmission substation. The incident coincided with a strong rainfall period and strong winds.
“Detailed investigations revealed that Tower 528 collapsed after a trailer truck crashed into a conductor that was separated from Tower 527,” explained Mbah. “Further impact disrupts the stability of the nearest tower 526 and 524, causing significant structural damage.”

The collapse triggers a power outage that affects the main distribution companies, including Ikeja, Eko, and Discos Ibadan. However, TCN said that since then transferred the 165MW load route that was affected through alternative transmission channels to minimize disruption to power consumers.
“Our engineers are currently on the spot, working diligently to restore damaged infrastructure,” the company convinced. “TCN remains committed to the fast recovery of normal bulk electricity supply and to uphold the reliability of the national network.”
While the direct cause related to the weather, TCN stressed that unintentional impacts by trailer trucks contributed substantially to the severity of damage.
