The Tinubu Bola President on Wednesday demanded that the leaders of West Africa to uphold and continue the vision of the founders of the Economic Community of West African countries (Ecowas).
Tinubu, according to a statement issued by a special advisor about information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made a call in the main address as a 50 -year anniversary of the Regional Block in Lagos.
He urged the leaders of West Africa to see beyond the artificial borders created by the invaders and embracing each other as a family.
Tinubu, Chairperson of the Authority of the Head of State and the Ecowas Government, noted that Founding Fathers predicted the regional blocks that were more united, harmonious, and moved by goals that would benefit many generations.
He said: “Today, we celebrate not only five decades of history but the spirit of unity, resilience, and eternal destiny that defines our community.
“In 1975, our founder leaders imagined West Africa where the border united rather than dividing – the area of free movement, developing trade, and peaceful coexistence. The vision was still alive.”
The President said the regional block had fulfilled the expectations of the founders in many ways, including maintaining peace, trade liberalization, citizen free movement, and working together to overcome the problem of security and global pandemic.

“Ecowas is a flare from the African Association. In overcoming colonial heritage, we unite Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone countries under one vision – the achievement of global significance.
“Our region has pioneered the free movement, expanding intra-regional trade, and deepening integration through instruments such as ecowas trade liberalization schemes and joint border posts.
“These steps have facilitated business, cultural exchange, and mobility throughout West Africa,” said the Nigerian leader.
In peace and security, he said Ecowas had acted decisively to restore the constitutional order and against instability.
“Our regional cooperation on contrarterrorism and financial crimes, including through Gibotha, reflects our joint commitment to peace and safety.
“In government, Ecowas has upheld democratic norms through observation of elections, mediation, and institutions such as the Ecowas Parliament and the Judicial Court-which strengthens accountability, legal supremacy, and government centered on the people,” the President concluded.
