President Bola Tinubu on Thursday urged the governor-elect of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, to prioritize the development of his state.
The President also assured him of the full support of the Federal Government and the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).
President Tinubu said this at a meeting with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, where Okpebholo and the deputy governor-elect, Dennis Idahosa, handed over their certificates of return in Abuja.
He emphasized the importance of good governance in Edo State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday evening declared Okpebholo the winner of the election ahead of his rival from the People’s Democratic Party (PD), Asue Ighodalo.
He polled 291,667 votes to edge out Ighodalo’s 247,274 votes in a closely contested election.
Labor Party flag bearer, Olumide Akpata, finished third with 22,763 votes.
However, Ighodalo and his party rejected the election results and vowed to challenge them in court.

Tinubu said: ”Governor-elect, you can now face the task of development. We are here to work with you.
“You have seen progressive APC governors. They are truly progressive. Work with them. Learn the ins and outs, and I’m sure you can do it.
“You have achieved victory. Democracy is difficult, especially in democracies and emerging economies like ours.
“If you hear complaints from countries like America, you know how difficult it is to run a democracy. But it is still the best form of government.”
The President congratulated Okpebholo and his deputies and described them as “good symbols of people ordained by God to work together.”
“You start as rivals and end as partners. You are a symbol of good understanding in politics; the person who leads our party has experienced it before,” he added.
Tinubu acknowledged the role played by former Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, progressive governors and the APC leadership in the success of the Edo governorship election.
“I saw Adams Oshiomhole exuding joy, sincerely the governors appeared in Edo, they impressed me. They defend the party. “They work hard for the party,” he said.
In his remarks, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje praised the leadership and support of the president, governors and all stakeholders.
“On election day, there was an interesting scenario: it was raining heavily, but people came out to vote without using umbrellas.
“Your Excellency, the people believe that our party is the party that must be chosen, and we won the election,” he said.
