President Bola Tinubu attributed the persistent insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the North West region, to inherited security compromises and historical injustices meted out to victims of conflict.
Speaking at a two-day security and peace summit in Katsina on Monday, President Tinubu noted that banditry and insurgency the country is facing is a result of historical injustices that have divided society.
“We promised to make Nigeria safer, and this goal has been our top priority since we took office,” Tinubu said.
“But, I ask, how can we achieve this sacred goal if even one party is disturbed? We have long established that whatever disturbs one party in this federation will disturb the other party. So, the issue of national security in the North West is not a sectoral agenda “, said the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Tinubu stressed the need to address historical injustices, reverse institutional weaknesses, and confront ideological evils to achieve peace in the region.
He also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the federal government, state governments and security agencies to build a unified security infrastructure.

“The solution we are looking for is an area where every trader is safe, every group is at peace, and where the presence of the state police and military is optimal.
“This disintegration, stemming from cyclical clashes between herders and farmers, has shattered the idea of unity that was the very foundation of North Korea. We must unite to build pragmatic solutions to our security compromises,” he added.
Chairman of the North West Governors Forum, Dikko Radda, also emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to address insecurity and promote development in the region.
“Bandits have cast a shadow over our community,” Radda said. “This has disrupted life, hampered economic activity, and created fear among our community. We cannot allow this threat to dominate our territory.”
UNDP Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Gyekyeua Atafauh, added that the security and peace summit initiative was an important step in encouraging development and deepening the foundations of peace in the northern region of Nigeria.
“If Nigeria has to maintain its position as an African giant, we must pay attention to the Northwest region,” Atafauh said.
The summit, organized by the North-North-West Governors Forum in collaboration with UNDP, brought together stakeholders from across the region to discuss ways to address persistent insecurity and promote peace and development in the North West.
