President Bola Tinubu has ordered all political appointees in his government who are running for the 2027 elections to resign by March 31.
This was disclosed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in a circular issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Public Service Office, Dr. Ibrahim Kana, on Wednesday in Abuja.
The directive, according to the circular, is in line with Article 88(1) of the 2026 Election Law, as well as the schedule issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries leading up to the polls.
It read: “The directive is in accordance with the provisions of Section 88(1) of the 2026 Election Law, as well as the schedule issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.”
This directive applies to all categories of political appointees to the presidency who wish to participate in party primaries or run for elected office.
“Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors general and chief executives of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions and government-owned companies.
“All affected officials must submit their resignation letters through the SGF office on or before the stipulated deadline.
“This step is necessary to ensure compliance with election laws, promote transparency, and guarantee equality for all candidates,” the circular added.
