President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to suspend the cashless payment system recently implemented by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Keyamo made the announcement on Wednesday, March 4, while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The President directed that the system be reviewed to ensure that it works efficiently without causing unnecessary inconvenience to travellers.

“He ordered that we go back to the drawing board, suspend the current system and perfect a system that will work perfectly without putting unnecessary pressure on citizens,” Keyamo said.

The minister added that a rapid decision is needed, including possible collaboration with the private sector. A temporary hybrid system will allow travelers who already have payment cards to continue using them, while cash payments will be accepted for those who prefer.

The FAAN cashless system was introduced this week at Lagos and Abuja airports, but its implementation has caused long queues and delays for travellers, prompting presidential intervention.
