George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has made it clear that President Bola Tinubu is not opposed to the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1.
The protest, titled “#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria” and dubbed “10 Days of Rage,” has been the subject of heated debate.
Speaking at a ministerial press conference in Abuja, Akume underlined the Federal Government’s call to prioritise peace and progress, while recognising the right of citizens to protest peacefully.
“The government of President Tinubu recognizes the right to peaceful protest, but stresses the importance of circumspection and vigilance to avoid hijacking by bandits, insurgents and other criminals,” Akume said.
He highlighted the challenging circumstances inherited from the Tinubu administration, including long-standing security challenges and an economy that requires urgent reform. “In just 14 months, the administration has achieved significant milestones, laying the foundation for immediate, medium and long-term prosperity for Nigerians,” he noted.
Akume urged Nigerians to shun calls for protests against hunger and instead focus on dialogue and collaboration to address the nation’s challenges. He reassured the public of the government’s commitment to creating a stable and prosperous Nigeria, urging citizens to avoid any action that would disturb national peace.
“Let us pursue the path of peace, dialogue and collaboration in addressing the challenges we collectively face. Together, we will create a Nigeria where peace and stability are a reality, economic growth is tangible and the dreams of our people become a shared national destiny,” Akume concluded.
