President Bola Tinubu has sought Senate approval to review the 2026 Allocation Bill.
The President made this request in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Insha Allah Akpabio, and read out at Tuesday’s plenary session in Abuja.
Tinubu, in his letter, proposed an increase of N9 trillion to increase the total budget from N58.4 trillion to N67.4 trillion.
The President said the request aims to strengthen fiscal transparency to ensure the effective implementation of national priority programs.
Tinubu listed three main objectives of the request to include regularization and taking into account outstanding legacy commitments from previous appropriation cycles.

This, he said, is so that these projects do not burden the implementation of the 2026 budget.
Tinubu said the proposal aims to consolidate and appropriately account for existing government debt within the fiscal framework, while providing provisions for a number of strategic and priority projects.
Third, it aims to align the 2026 financing plan with revised spending in a way to maintain macro-fiscal stability and reduce pressure on the domestic financial market, he said.
Akpabio then submitted the request to the Appropriations Committee for further legislative input and resubmitted the request to the plenary session in the coming days.
