Tinubu stated seven days of mourning, FEC emergency meeting to respect the end of Buhari

Ball President Ahmed Tinubu has announced a national mourning period for a week and summoned the Emergency Session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to pay homage to the former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at a hospital in London after a short illness.

In a statement that was signed personally on Sunday night, President Tinubu stated a deep sadness of the loss, describing Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” whose life was marked by the task, sacrifice, and services that were not shaken to the nation.

“President Buhari is the core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. The legacy of service and sacrifice survived,” said Tinubu. “He served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and then as a democratic elected president from 2015 to 2023.”

The President stated that all national flags were raised in half staff for seven days starting immediately, to respect the late leader.

“As a sign of respect to our former leaders, I have directed that all national flags fly in half staff throughout the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu wrote.

In addition, Tinubu announced the meeting of the Emergency Federal Executive Council which will be held on Tuesday, July 15, especially dedicated to commemorating the late former president.

Reflecting on Buhari’s time in the office, Tinubu praised his anti-corruption efforts and commitment to public service reform, noting that he “placed the state above personal interest at every opportunity.”

“He fought for discipline in public services, faced corruption directly, and placed the state over personal interest at every opportunity,” he said.

Tinubu described Buhari as a leader who guided the nation through difficult times “with calm power, deep integrity, and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

He gave a sincere condolence to the wife of the late President, Aisha Buhari, their children, and the whole family of Buhari, as well as for traditional people and rulers of Daura in the state of Katsina.

“At the time of this national sorrow, I expressed my deepest condolences to my beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I continued to touch, her children, the whole family of Buhari, and all who knew and loved him.

“I also gave a condolence to the government and people in the state of Katsina, especially people and traditional leaders of the Emirate Daura,” said Tinubu.

The President convinced the country that the federal government would regulate the suitable state burial to reflect the towering body of the buhari inheritance.

“We respect his service. We reflect on His legacy. And we pray for a peaceful rest from his soul. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and give him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And hopefully his life continues to inspire the Nigerian generation to serve with courage, beliefs, and selflessness,” Tinubu concluded.
