Traders shut down the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex over alleged government takeover plans

Commercial activities came to a halt at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex after traders closed their shops in protest against alleged plans by state and local governments to take control of the management of the market.

The protest disrupted the operation of the sprawling market as hundreds of traders abandoned their stalls and gathered around the car park and garage within the complex to express their concerns.

According to traders, this proposed arrangement could result in additional levies and taxes that could put further financial pressure on businesses operating in these facilities.

Many of them argued that the trade fair complex remains a federal asset and stressed that restructuring its management should not be undertaken without broader consultation with stakeholders.

The closure impacted several parts of the market, including ASPANDA Market, which is widely considered to be one of the largest auto parts trading hubs in Lagos.

Witnesses said the protests began in the morning when traders deliberately closed their shops and stalls in a coordinated manner to draw attention to their objections.

“We are not against development, but we are concerned about possible levies and taxes that may be imposed if the management structure changes,” said a trader who identified himself as Emeka Onu.

Amid the tensions, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole visited the market as part of efforts to engage with traders and encourage them to resume normal business activities.

Before starting his tour of the complex, the minister called for the market gates to be reopened, explaining that his visit was intended to meet stakeholders and help restore normal trading activities.
