Slovakian side AS Trencin have pulled off a major coup by signing last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) surprise signing Sani Suleiman on a two-year contract. Own goal Nigeria.com can reveal exclusively.
Sani, who joined Akwa United mid-season, finished with 12 goals and five assists in 20 games over a four-month period. This earned him the league’s best young player award at the recently concluded League Bloggers Awards (LBA).
Last month, former Nigeria senior national team coach Finidi George identified the teenager for a place in the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic respectively, but club duties denied him the chance to play for the Super Eagles.
Sani, 17, was pursued by a host of clubs in Belgium and the Netherlands but Trencin won the race for his signature with the player’s camp prioritising his development over financial gains at this stage of his career.
All necessary paperwork has been completed for the GBS Academy player to move to AS Trencin. Suleiman is keen to follow in the footsteps of other successful Nigerian wingers from the renowned GBS academy such as Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu and Hilary Gong who used AS Trencin as a springboard to their thriving careers.
He is expected to leave for Slovakia on Tuesday to sign the final points of the agreement, which includes an option to extend it for another two years.
