● Army cracks down on oil theft and sabotage and seizes over 118,000 liters of stolen products
Troops of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations against illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.
In a statement, 6th Division Army Public Relations Acting Deputy Director Lt. Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma said last week 11 suspects were arrested, more than 20 illegal bunkering sites were deactivated and 22 vessels used for criminal activities were intercepted.
It added that six firearms and cartridges were recovered, along with more than 118,000 liters of stolen petroleum products.
He said multiple operations were conducted in Rivers State, including the dismantling of four illegal refineries and the interception of 35,000 liters of stolen products in Jigama-Bille area of Degema Local Government Area (LGA).
Similarly, in Krakarma-Bille, troops decommissioned four illegal refining sites, seizing 14,000 liters of stolen automotive diesel and 8,000 liters of crude oil.
5,500 liters of condensate was recovered from the Orashi River area and a suspect was arrested for vandalizing the pipeline near the Nigerian Agip Oil Company in Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema LGA.


Danjuma said in Bayelsa State, troops decommissioned an illegal refining site in Nembe LGA, confiscating over 30,000 liters of stolen oil. Two active illegal refining sites have been dismantled in Southern Ijaw LGA and 4,500 liters of stolen products have been seized. Further operations in Tobo, Obotoro and Arugba creeks recovered over 15,000 liters of illegally refined products and identified illegal pipeline connections near Idu Wellhead 4.
He said Delta State also saw significant action when troops intercepted a Lexus RX 350 carrying three suspects and recovered five shotguns, a Danish pistol and 51 cartridges.
The suspects were handed over to security authorities for further investigation.
In Warri South LGA, troops intercepted a wooden boat siphoning crude oil from the wellhead of an Opumami oil field. Several illegal refining sites have been decommissioned on Benneth Island, leading to the recovery of more than 7,500 liters of stolen crude oil.
Danjuma said the troops also maintained enhanced security patrols in Akwa Ibom State to prevent criminal activities both in the hinterlands and waterways.
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding the 6th Division, commended the troops for their efforts and promised to support operations to safeguard national resources and infrastructure in the region.
