The Nigerian Army said its troops on Thursday repelled an attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on a Police station in Ebonyi State, and in the ensuing gunfight, killed five attackers.
A statement posted on the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Thursday night, said suspected IPOB fighters had stormed the Isheke Police station and burnt the facility, as well as several vehicles on the premises.
The Army said after receiving a distress call, troops were dispatched and the fighters were defeated, with five of them killed while the others fled the scene.
“Nigerian Army troops, in a swift and decisive response, have repelled an attack on Isheke Police Station, which was attacked by suspected IPOB terrorists resulting in the burning of the facility and several vehicles,” the statement said.

“The troops, upon arrival at the scene, launched a counterattack on the terrorists, defeating them and forcing them to flee in disarray.
“Therefore, the troops engaged in a pursuit of the terrorists, leading to an intense gunfight, resulting in the elimination of five suspected terrorists and the seizure of several weapons.”
The TNI added that the weapons confiscated from the suspects included one PKT machine gun with a link belt containing 94 rounds of ammunition, two AK-47 rifles with three magazines containing 11 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition and one light machine gun with a magazine.
Also secured was a Sienna SUV with registration number Ebonyi CHR-364JC.
“The Nigerian Army will continue to operate in synergy with other armed forces and security agencies to combat terrorist activities perpetrated by IPOB and its armed affiliate, ESN. We urge all law-abiding citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to the security agencies,” the post added.
