Troops kill terrorists, free 40 hostages in Nigeria’s troubled north

Nigerian Army troops last weekend killed several terrorists in sustained bombardment of their hideouts and enclaves in the northern part of the country.

In a statement on its social media platforms late Sunday, the army said troops rescued 40 kidnapped people and recovered weapons and ammunition in the operation.

The statement read: “In a significant development, the army also arrested a notorious arms courier who was found carrying a large quantity of ammunition, dealing a major blow to the proliferation of arms by criminal elements.

“Personnel of the Nigerian Army while acting on intelligence, intercepted the terrorists and during the exchange of fire neutralized some of them and recovered 303 live rounds of 7.62 mm (special) ammunition hidden in a bag.

“The suspect and his vehicle were immediately seized and further investigations are underway to arrest his accomplices.

“Additional engagements in Ankwa village, Kachia Local Government Area also led to the elimination of two more terrorists and the seizure of locally made firearms, 11 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition and a motorbike used by the terrorists.

“The suspect and his vehicle were immediately seized and further investigations are underway to arrest his accomplices.

“In another operation in Kaduna State, troops carried out precision strikes in forests near Danmari and Saulawa villages in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, where a terrorist was eliminated.

”Additional engagements in Ankwa village, Kachia Local Government Area also led to the elimination of two more terrorists and the seizure of locally made firearms, 11 rounds of 7.62 mm (special) ammunition and a motorbike used by the terrorists.

“In Borno State, troops confronting fleeing terrorists in Faayijiwa Fandanari village in Magumeri Local Government Area have recovered two AK-47 rifles, 61 rounds of 7.62 mm (NATO) ammunition, 51 rounds of 7.62 mm (special) ammunition, drugs -hard drugs. and various supplies.

“The terrorists abandoned their firearms and ammunition after surrendering to the superior firepower of the troops. Further operations in Gwoza Local Government Area resulted in the neutralization of three terrorists near Ashigashiya village, while vigilant troops responding to credible intelligence, pursued and intercepted a convoy suspected of transporting logistics to terrorists in Gubio.

“Three vehicles containing food supplies destined for the terrorist camp were seized, and the sum of N2,400 was recovered.

“Efforts in Kukawa Local Government Area again yielded victory when troops, acting on intelligence, intercepted terrorists who were trying to relocate abductees from Cijin village. The terrorists fled after seeing the troops, 38 hostages, including 6 men, 8 women, and 24 children, who were rescued by the troops.

“Meanwhile, in Yobe State, troops responding to reports of terrorists extorting civilians successfully carried out an ambush in Sasawa village in Damaturu Local Government Area.

“The troops managed to neutralize a terrorist and recovered an AK-47 rifle along with a motorbike.”
