Troost-Ekong clears doubts, praises Fredericks after the victory of Super Eagles

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, approached the rumors surrounding his disappointment for not starting at the Crucial Victoria of the Super Eagles World Cup on Rwanda.
Speaking after the game, the experienced defender dismissed the speculation and, instead, praised the young Benjamin Fredericks, who offered an impressive performance in his competitive debut for the national team.

“The approach should not be in me, why I didn’t start,” said Troost-Ekong. “I think we should say great congratulations to Benjamin (Fredericks).

“He played an incredible game. Entering a game that brought so much pressure at his age is not something easy, and he handled it very well.”

The captain of the Super Eagles also emphasized the complete commitment of the team to qualify for the FIFA 2026 World Cup, saying that the players are determined to give everything to reserve their place in the United States next year.

“We have another important game on Tuesday,” he continued.

“I saw the costume just after the final beep, and there was no celebration, only the pure desire to continue advancing.

“We really believe in what we are doing, and although we can only control things within our reach, we will take it step by step. The next step is South Africa.”

The clash against Rwanda marked the 80th appearance of Troost-Ekong for the Super Eagles.

Despite being late, replacing Cyriel’s despair in the 87th minute, showed composure and leadership in the dying moments of the game.

With the weight of Tuesday’s encounter against South Africa, there is the possibility that Eric Chelle considers a formation of five backs, to accommodate Ekong in central defense.
