There are many things that can be highlighted from Donald Trump’s latest public appearance.
Here are four:
Inconsistencies in discussions with Iran
That US president has said several times in recent hours that dialogue with Iran is underway.
“They want to make a deal,” he said on the plane back to Washington DC on Sunday evening, repeating the same thing again on Monday.
But when asked the obvious question – “Who are you talking to and looking to make a deal with?” and “what’s the deal like?” – the president could not answer.
Instead, he says that everyone they spoke to is now dead. He has said this before, and strangely, linked this to the success of military operations.
He’s also pondering whether he really wants to make a deal with Iran even if they want him to. These musings are peppered with “they want to make a deal.”
Artificial intelligence
The President revealed that he had seen a video (presumably on social media) showing the US aircraft carrier, the Abraham Lincoln, being attacked and burned.
He then revealed that he had called his general and asked: “What’s wrong with Abraham Lincoln? Looks like he’s on fire.”
He was later told it was fake.
This raises serious questions about the type of content the president absorbs and believes on social media.
Starmer calls
The president and prime minister spoke by telephone on Sunday. The “readout” of the phone call from Downing Street was very thin and revealed little. A source later told me the call was “good” and there was a “clear mutual interest in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.”
I was told that the public frustration expressed by the president was not reflected in the call.
The President has now revealed further opportunities for such talks.
“You know the prime minister of the UK – the UK – yesterday said to me, ‘I met with my team to make a decision’.”
“I said, ‘You don’t need to meet with the team. You are the prime minister. You can make it yourself… why do you have to meet with your team to find out whether you are sending us some minesweepers or not…'”
Learn about Lebanon
In another moment of sober thought, he revealed that he had just been briefed on the geographic power structure in Lebanon – something important to understand given the current US-backed Israeli military operations there. In the same sentence, he also expressed his surprise that people even live in Ukraine or Lebanon.
This is a verbatim transcript of that moment: “…important people, rich people, whose parents lived in Lebanon. I said: ‘Really, how do you live in Lebanon? Your parents? Oh, yes, they live there. And over the years, they’ve gotten used to the fact that the country is being bombed.’
“But they explained to me that this is a different part of Lebanon. It’s the part where Hezbollah is, and they’re used to that, I think… I mean, people live in Ukraine.
“You might think they wouldn’t live in Ukraine, but they live in Ukraine. I don’t know if I would do that, but they live in Ukraine. They live in Lebanon.”
