Trump US fares targeting uninhabited Australian territory, lifting eyebrows globally

Announcement of President Donald Trump on the sweeping US tariff has attracted attention to the inclusion of several remote and rare areas, including inexperienced Australia and the McDonal Islands, known for their colonies.

On Wednesday, Trump stated that starting Saturday, the US would impose a 10 percent flat rate on imports from the majority of the country. In addition, a higher tariff complex system, based on factors such as trade deficits, subsidies, and currency manipulation, is determined to take effect from April 9 for certain countries.

The inclusion of the Sub-Antarctic Island group is not a case isolated from an unusual target in the White House tariff list. Australian external regions on the island of Norfolk, with a population of more than 2,000, are also scheduled to face “29 percent discounts of reciprocity rates,” an increase of 19 percent compared to all Australia.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his confusion about the inclusion of the Norfolk Island. “I am not sure that Norfolk Island, in connection with that, is a competitor of trade with the US giant economy but this shows and exemplifies the fact that there is no place on earth being released,” he said on Thursday.

When asked about the tariffs in Norfolk, Heard, and the McDonal Islands, the White House told Politico that these areas were registered only because they were Australia.

Further online political publications report that Australian Christmas Island, and the British Indian Ocean region, are also included in the tariff list. The British Indian Ocean region, a islands of 58 islands managed by London, is mostly uninhabited except for Diego Garcia, which functions as a US/British military base.

Other remote areas targeted by US rates including Tokelau, New Zealand region in South Pacific with around 1,500 residents, and Norwegian foreign regions in Svalbard, with a population of 2,500, and Jan Mayen, who did not have a permanent population but accommodated 18 people during the winter in the Arctic circle.
