Operatives of the Makurdi Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested two former staff of Union Bank in Makurdi for allegedly stealing the sum of N4,199,500.00 belonging to a deceased customer of the bank.
Suspects Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute were arrested on Friday, 21 June 2024 in Makurdi, Benue State.
According to a statement from Dele Ouewole, head of media and publicity of the EFCC, they were arrested following a petition filed by the bank against them for debit fraud on a deceased customer, Emmanuel Azer Agenna account.
Their transactions were said to have come to light when the deceased’s family approached the bank to request the balance of the deceased’s account for probate processing. The family disputed the balance given to them by the bank and later sent a complaint to the bank regarding unauthorized debiting of the account.
He said, “Based on their complaint, the bank conducted an internal investigation and its findings revealed that a debit card was obtained on the deceased customer’s account on May 10, 2023 by Ifah Ogoh, one of the bank’s Sales and Service Associates which was authorized by the bank on the same date
.”Further findings by the bank showed that the card obtained by Ogoh had been handed over to another Sales and Service Associate, Agbo Omwute who eventually handed over the card to his accomplice to transfer and withdraw funds from the deceased’s account. Some of the withdrawals were allegedly made by the suspect through his accomplices.”
He also revealed that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as the investigation was completed.
