The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) on Friday confirmed that two people were killed in a Thursday ship accident in the Jaranja River, the Shagari Regional Government in the Sokoto state.
Niwa Area Manager in Sokoto, Mr. Bala Bello, told reporters on Friday night that emergency respondents rescued nine passengers at the scene.
He blamed the accident for negligence, overload, and violating other safety rules.
Niwa officials said the rescue team consisting of officials from Niwa, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Red Cross community took part in the rescue operation.

He revealed that the operation to find the missing people was ongoing.
The incident was the third in the northwestern state this month.
At least four passengers were killed, 41 survivors, and five were declared missing in a ship accident in Kojiyo Village in the Goronyo Regional Government in the state on August 17.
Three people were confirmed dead, and 20 others were missing in a similar incident in the state on August 22.
