Two people have been docked for illegal possession of firearms in Benue

Police on Monday charged two men, Terhile Yarnum and Simon Changoji, at the Makurdi Magistrates Court in Benue for alleged possession of illegal firearms.

However, the judge, Mrs. Ajuma Igama, did not accept the defendant’s application because he did not have jurisdiction.

Igama ordered that the defendants be returned to Makurdi Correctional Institution and adjourned the case to May 11 for further discussions.

Previously, the prosecutor, Insp. Inedu Friday told the court that one Kanshio Cyprin from Ukemberegya, Logo local government area, reported the case to Anyin Divisional Police Station.

“The complainant stated that he was working with five other people on the farm when Terhile Yarnum and Simon Changoji and many other people from the Changoji family attacked them.

“He reported that the attackers came and trespassed into the area with sticks, glasses and firearms, attacked them and injured one Terhile Abraham on his forehead.

“They then took away carts filled with yam seeds, all worth a total of N136,000,” the prosecutor told the court.

Friday said the defendants were arrested in connection with the crime while the others remain at large.

Prosecutors said investigations into the matter were ongoing and asked the court to choose another date to be named.

He said the offenses were contrary to Sections 97, 349, 254, 288 of the Benue State Criminal Code Law of 2004; and Article 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act 3004 is recommended.
