Two policemen feared killed, three others injured as Shiites launch attack in Abuja

At least two police officers were confirmed dead while three others sustained injuries after an attack by members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, on a number of Nigeria Police personnel at Wuse Junction near a traffic light on Sunday.

A statement by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirming the attack, described it as an unprovoked attack targeting police personnel at the checkpoint.

Adeh said the attackers were “armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices described as locally made bombs in bottles filled with kerosene, and knives.”

“The brutal attack left two policemen dead and three others unconscious, and are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. In addition to the fatalities, three police patrol vehicles were also burnt in the attack,” he said.

However, the police spokesperson assured the public that the situation was under control and normalcy had been restored in the area while further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, also condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice, adding that the police had made several arrests in connection with the incident.
