Nigeria’s Falconets began their campaign at this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia on a perfect note after edging out South Korea 1-0 in their opening Group D match in the early hours of Monday.
A late goal from Stade de Reim striker Flourish Sabastine secured all three points for the Falconets.
Sabastine also scored a late winner for the Falconets as they defeated France 1-0 in their opening match of the 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
The victory over South Korea leaves the Falconets in second place in Group D behind Germany, who thrashed Venezuela 5-2.
Meanwhile, the Falconets will face Germany in their second Group D match scheduled for September 4, while Korea will take on Venezuela.
The Falconets dominated the first five minutes of the match, but were unable to create any real scoring opportunities.
In the 25th minute the Koreans came close to scoring, but Folorunsho cleared the ball in time.
Just two minutes later, the Falconets should have opened the scoring, but Lucky missed a glorious opportunity.
With two minutes left in the first half, Korea had a clear chance, but Hyeyoung failed to convert it.
Then, in the first minute of added time in the first half, Kim Shinji saw his shot hit the post.
Just like in the first half, the Falconets started the second half on the right foot and almost got their reward in the 50th minute, but the Korean goalkeeper denied them a goal.
The game continued to drag on with both teams making changes without getting any results.
With seven minutes remaining, the Koreans almost got their reward, but Bakare made a good save.
The Falconets finally managed to open the scoring in the 86th minute thanks to Sabastine.
In the 89th minute, the Koreans almost equalised at the last moment, but Bakare came to the Falconets’ rescue with another impressive save.
