U20 AFCON: Nigeria goes to Flying with Win Over Tunisia

The Flying Eagles began their 2025 campaign of the Sub-20 Cup of the Africa Cup with a hard 1-0 victory over Tunisia at the Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.

The result marks the consecutive AFCon for Nigeria over Tunisia, after its 4-0 victory in the playoffs of the third place in the previous edition.

This time, it was a stricter matter, but the Flying Eagles remained firm to claim the three points in their first group B.

Auwal Ibrahim emerged the hero of the night, scoring the winning goal of the match in the 37th minute.

Ibrahim clung to a perfectly heavy ball from Odinaka Okoro before spending quietly next to the Tunisian goalkeeper in the lower corner.

Tunisia had the first real opportunity of the game in the sixth minute, but could not capitalize, and since then, Nigeria slowly became the contest.

The organization of the Flying Eagles and the compact defense kept the North Africa at bay during the rest of the first half.

The second half saw both teams adopt a more cautious approach. Tunisia pressed in search of an equalizer, but fought to tear down a resolved Nigerian defense.

Meanwhile, Nigeria sought to handle the game and protect his little advantage.

In the 72nd minute, Nigeria received a penalty after a foul inside the box, but the decision was revoked after a VAR review that offers Tunisia a line of life that he could not finally take.

In another part of Group B, the second accessory between Morocco and debutants Kenya will take place later today. The result of that party could shape the dynamics of the group that advances.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu and his players will now take care of his next challenge, an early clash against Morocco on Sunday, May 4.

With an impulse on their side, the Flying Eagles will seek to maintain their winning form and take a great step towards the qualification for the qualifying stages.
