UFC: Adesanya faces crucial showdown against Pyfer in career-defining fight

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will return to the Octagon on Sunday in what is widely seen as a decisive clash against rising American contender Joe Pyfer.

The highly anticipated bout will headline UFC Fight Night 271 at Climate Pledge Arena.

Adesanya (24-5-0), once the dominant force in the middleweight division, enters the fight under pressure after suffering three straight defeats.

The Nigerian-born fighter has lost to Sean Strickland, Dricus du Plessis and, most recently, Nassourdine Imavov, who knocked him out in February 2025.

Now ranked fourth in the division, the 36-year-old will aim to prove he still belongs among the sport’s elite fighters.

Speaking before the match, Adesanya insisted he had always challenged the best opponents and remained active during his reign as champion, stressing that his contribution to the sport is often overlooked.

In his path is Pyfer (15-3-0), a 29-year-old prospect currently ranked 14th in the division. Pyfer enters the fight in fine form, riding a three-fight win streak, including notable victories over Abusupiyan Magomedov and Kelvin Gastelum.

For Pyfer, the bout offers an important chance to break into the top ranks of the division, while for Adesanya, it could determine whether he remains a serious contender for another title run.

The main event features a women’s flyweight rematch between former champion Alexa Grasso and in-form contender Maycee Barber. Barber enters the competition on a seven-fight win streak since her last loss to Grasso in 2021.

A win for Adesanya could silence critics and revive his championship ambitions, while another defeat could mark a significant turning point in his career.
