Uganda approves additional 905 billion for AFCON 2027 preparations

The Government of Uganda has approved an additional $240.97 million (UGX 905 billion) to accelerate preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The funding decision follows a recent CAF inspection which revealed that none of the country’s existing stadiums currently meet the required Category 4 standards.

The supplementary budget was announced by Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairman of the Communications and Signage Subcommittee of the Local Organizing Committee.

Dr Mugimba described the allocation as part of a “whole of government, whole of country” approach aimed at ensuring Uganda successfully hosts the continental tournament.

With this latest allocation, Uganda’s total expenditure on AFCON 2027 preparations now exceeds $588 million.

The main tournament venues in the country will be the renovated Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) in Kampala and the newly built Hoima City Stadium.

Both facilities will be upgraded to meet CAF Category 4 requirements, including increased seating, improved lighting and improved media and broadcast facilities.

In addition to these iconic venues, several other grounds have been proposed to support the tournament.
