Uganda, Kenya write to JAMB to verify Nigerian students’ records

Kenyan and Ugandan examination boards have written to Nigerian authorities to verify records submitted by Nigerian candidates seeking admission into higher education institutions in their countries.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) disclosed this yesterday in a document for its 2024 policy meeting.

JAMB assured in the document that it would not falsify any student’s records.

The examining body stressed the need to protect higher education in Nigeria from harm.

This comes against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s decision to suspend verification of degree certificates from Uganda, Kenya, Benin Republic, Togo and several other countries over allegations of certificate racketeering.

Recalling the sequel to the investigative report published by the Daily Nigerian exposing the activities of fake degree mills in Benin Republic, the Federal Government, in March, set up an Inter-Ministerial Investigation Committee on Degree Mills to investigate the activities of degree racketeers.

The investigative report led the Nigerian government to ban the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from the Republic of Benin and Togo.

Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, after receiving the committee’s report, noted that holders of fake degrees from Nigerian and foreign universities would be excluded from the system.

The initiative is one of the recommendations made by the Inter-Ministerial Investigation Committee on Diploma Forgery set up by the government to combat fake diploma racketeers in the country.

However, in the document, JAMB stressed that “Uganda and Kenya examination boards have now written to JAMB to confirm the records provided by candidates for admission. JAMB will not falsify records.”
