Uniabuja discovers 200 false admissions, warns the parents of …

The vice-chalking of the acting of the University of Abuja, Professor Lar Manko, warned Nigerian parents and guardians not to pay money to influence the university admission process for their children, describing the practice as illegal and exploitation.

He said that these actions not only undermine the integrity of the admission process, but also exhibit unsuspecting families to scammers and criminal unions.

Speaking during an interaction with the media on Wednesday in Abuja, the Elma of the University revealed that over 200 false admissions had recently been discovered within the institution, many of whom were connected to people who collected money with false claims, ensuring potential placement students in the institution.

He said that the investigations had shown that some candidates had paid unscrupulous people to get entrance to the university, only to find out later that their admissions had not been recognized by the joint entry committee and official registers.

The media briefing has been summoned to update the public on the registered results, the challenges found and addressed during its six -month mandate, which will end next month.

Speaking in his address, the acting VC said: “When I hired the assignment, I confronted myself with an admission problem for students, where there were over 200 false admissions. It was not as easy.

“A Committee was established, which took the time to investigate the reasons, the immediate and remote causes. And this was resolved. It was really a challenge. We have parents who are willing to pay money. There is no need to pay money. Nigerian parents should stop paying money to get admission. I want to use this opportunity to say clearly,” he said.

According to the VC, many students affected by false admission have fallen victims due to ignorance and despair.

He urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children elapses admission only through official platforms of admissions and enrollments and university portals.

“The affected people should visit our academic office or even my office directly. If you have not crossed Jamb or our system, you’re not inside. Don’t let anyone deceive you.”

He added that the affected people are guided on how to regularize their status, but he warned that these calm damage the reputation of the university.

According to her, the fraudulent racket of admission was one of the numerous administrative and governance challenges that he inherited when appointed by President Bola Tinubu to stabilize the institution at the beginning of this year.

In addition to curbing corruption, the vice-sealing also highlighted the reforms focused on students, including the successful conduct of the first elections of the government of the union of digital students, in which over 5,000 students voted online.

“It was a joyful and proud moment. Now we have a democratically elected union after years of suppression of the students’ voice.” There was no delivery note when I assumed the assignment. The university was fragmented, full of petitions, factions and demotivated staff. But we worked to restore institutional order and integrity. “

He also announced that over 12,000 students had benefited from entrepreneurial training initiatives and Empowerment, including support for the registration of school and society, making graduates more employable.

“We have introduced what we call Empowerment Center for career students, we have energized students and introduced measures that will make their experience on the campus far enriching. And, you know, they have the opportunity to learn the skills, to develop entrepreneurial skills.

“Currently, over 12,000 students have been enhanced practically through those centers to enrich their academic experience. They will use and I can tell you that the generation of students who will go out of this period, will be more occupable because they are students who are encouraged to learn extra skills. We have a driving school that now has over 500 students who combine with it.

“You can imagine students graduating with a driving license. You can imagine students graduating with your registered companies. These are some of the attributes that are making the University of Abuja a learning environment that will be the first place for everyone.”

Since it came into office five months ago, the acting VC has declared that it had given priority to the restoration of merit -based systems, including academic promotions, staff well -being and inclusive governance.

Over 40 associated professors and professors who had been delayed or denied the promotion were finally high, bringing joy and renewed motivation to the academic community.

“Some promotions have been delayed for a maximum of six years. We have faced this. Over 300 petitions on the promotion and well -being of the staff have been revised.”

He also complained about the state of infrastructure on the campus, in particular staff homes.

“Some professors live in unsuitable buildings. I saw the photos and I cried. We need serious financial investments and political will to face it.”

Likewise, the loan remained a persistent challenge for the University.

While recognizing the support of the government, the vice-changing acting, Professor Lar Patricia Manko, observed that the only public funding is no longer sufficient to meet the growing needs of quality higher education.

“The government cannot finance the entirely and efficient education,” he said. “We must start exploring alternative sources of revenue and improve the services we offer as university.”

He explained that several programs, in particular those aimed at expanding online access and digital learning, require significant investments in ICT infrastructures, including a robust backbone on the internet to support the delivery of virtual education.

Professor Manko also expressed concern about the inconsistency in the financing of capital, revealing that over 80 % of the 2024 budget allocation was not supported in cash, without any clarity on the disbursements for the tax year of 2025.

On a brighter note, he praised the impact of the 3 megawatt solar farm delivered in the context of the renewed energizing education program of hope, stating that he had significantly reduced diesel costs and an improvement in food to the main university buildings.

The vice-sealing said that the University has signed new international collaborations with institutions from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and Europe. New linguistic programs have also been introduced in Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Russian to expand students’ skills.

“We are reconstructing a global university, the one in which the students are equipped, the staff is motivated and diversity is respected”.

Despite the short period in office and the absence of a formal delivery, the VC has expressed optimism that the institution is on the right way to become a high -level research and innovation center in West Africa.

“Regardless of whether or not it remains in this position, I am proud of the work done so far. Uniabuja is now a place of hope again.”
