UNIJOS ASUU calls off strike over salary payments, flags concerns over benefits

Academic activities at the University of Jos have resumed after lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off their strike over payment of salaries in March 2026.

The decision was announced on Friday in a statement signed by UNIJOS ASUU Branch Chair, Prof. Jurbe Molwus.

The lecturers have initiated industrial action on 8 April 2026, protesting against delays in salary payments and exemptions from their Academic Allowances (EAAs).

Confirming the latest development, Molwus said, “We received information that the university administration received permission from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation for the payment of March salaries a few hours after the termination of our services on April 8, 2026.

“After a thorough evaluation, this morning we have confirmed the payment of our salaries for March 2026, because the majority of our members have received notification based on reports from various faculties.”

Although the strike was called off, the union expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of benefits in pay.

“The EAA component is still not included in our March 2026 salary payments.”

ASUU urges the Federal Government to address outstanding issues to ensure lasting industrial peace.

They called on the authorities “to provide the necessary funds to finance the full implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement to ensure the desired industrial harmony.”

The union then directed its members to return to their duties without delay.

“Therefore, all members are asked to immediately resume studying, taking exams, and attending statutory meetings as we continue to push for the inclusion of the EAA in our salaries,” the statement added.

However, unions warned that failure to resolve remaining issues could trigger other disruptions.

“We sincerely hope that the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, will take proactive and necessary steps to prevent us from stopping our services again at the end of April and the following months,” he added.
