Unimaid Asuu rejected the replacement of the institution’s name after Buhari, demanding a reversal

Chapter of the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) from the University Academic Staff Union (ASUU), has rejected the replacement of the name of the institution after the late President Muhammadu Buhari by President Bola Tinubu, and has demanded an immediate reversal.

Trade Unions, in a statement on Saturday signed by the chairman, Dr. Abubakar Mshelia Saidu, said the replacement of the name of the institution after Buhari was politically motivated and a brave insult to the university’s heritage, history, and academic integrity.

The statement added that the union mobilized the congress, veteran, and executive council that was expanded to fight the move by Tinubu to change the name of the university.

He also warned that the decision meant sacrificing the reputation obtained with difficulty for political protection, and calling for collective resistance, emphasizing that it would respond intellectually and factually, urged members and the public to contribute views before future consideration.

“This action is not only surprising; it tarnished the purity of our alma mater, especially when the university prepared to mark the 50th warning under the identity of ‘without paying’ respected,” said.

“We must articulate our opposition to insist and demand a direct reversal from this disliked and very offensive decision,” Saidu said.
