UNITY CUP 2025: 13 Interesting data on the competitors of Super Eagles-Ghana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, together with Ghana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, will compete in the Unity 2025 Cup of four nations.

This year’s tournament will take place from Tuesday, May 27 to Saturday, May 31, at the Gtech Community Stadium, Home Ground of the Premier League Brentford Club.

GHANA
– The first international game was against Nigeria in 1950

The first Black Stars international game was against the eternal rivals of Nigeria on May 28, 1950.

Known then as Gold Coast and British Togoland, Ghana was the host of the game at Accra and triumphed 1-0.

– Western African first country to win AFCON

Ghana’s black stars became the first country in Western Africa to win the African Cup of Nations.
They achieved the feat as hosts in the 1963 edition after hitting Sudan 3-0 in the final.

– Third most successful AFCon winners

With four titles, black stars are the third most successful side in the history of the African Cup of Nations.

African champions were crowned in 1963 (hosts), 1965, 1978 (hosts) and 1982.

Only the pharaohs of Egypt and the indomitable lions of Cameroon are more successful than Ghana. While Egypt has won the tournament seven times, Cameroon has five titles.

-Second team to win an consecutive AFCON

After Egypt, black stars are the second team to win the Nations Cup of Nations of Africa.

Egypt (then known as the United Arab Republic) won the first edition of AFCon in 1957 and defended its title in 1959 as hosts.

Ethiopia organized and won the 1962 tournament before Ghana was organized and also became a champion in 1963.

The 1965 tournament was organized in Tunisia, where Ghana defended his title by beating hosts 3–2 after extra time.

– Qualified for the First World Cup Senior Men of FIFA in 2006

After years of heartbreak, black stars finally qualified for the FIFA Senior Men World Cup by ensuring a ticket for the 2006 edition in Germany.

Despite being attracted to a group with Italy, the Czech Republic and the United States, black stars advanced to the 16 round.

They lost 2-0 against Italy in their opening game, but defeated the Czech Republic 2-0 and the United States 2-1 in their second and third group games, respectively.

JAMAICA
– The first international game was played in 1925

Known as Reggae Boyz, Jamaica’s first international game was played on March 22, 1925 against Haiti.

The game, which took place in Prince Port-Au, saw Jamaica emerge 1-0 winners.

– The first and only appearance in the FIFA Senior World Cup was France 1998

Jamaica qualified for the FIFA Senior World Cup in France 1998, which was his first and only appearance.

They were in the same group as the three times winners of the Argentine World Cup, Croatia and Japan.
In their inauguration against Croatia, they lost 3–1 and Argentina took them 5-0 in their second group game. However, they finished the tournament in a maximum surpassing Japan 2–1.

Jamaica has never faced Nigeria’s Super Eagles in a competitive game, since the previous six meetings have been friendly.

As part of the preparations for the 2002 Korean/Japan World Cup, the Super Eagles faced Jamaica in a draw in England and won 1-0, thanks to a strike by James Obiorah.
In November 2002, the Super Eagles received Jamaica in Lagos and played a 0-0 draw, while in May 2003, Jamaica received Nigeria and won 3–2.

In the Unity Cup 2004, the Super Eagles defeated Jamaica 2-0 before both teams faced each other again in 2009 and settled with a 0-0 draw.

In the FIFA ranking launched on April 3, 2025, Jamaica dropped a place at 63.

Trinidad and Tobago
– The first international game was played in 1905
