After Nigeria’s triumphant victory in the Unity 2025 Cup, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has emphasized the strategic importance of the tournament in the preparation of the Super Eagles for the next World Cup qualifiers.
In an informative session after the tournament, Gusau explained that the Unity Cup was organized to provide chief coach Eric Chelle recently appointed with a platform to instill their tactical philosophy and evaluate the adaptability of the players before the crucial qualifiers scheduled for September.

“First of all, that is the essence of this type of tournament,” said Gusau. “It took us for several months to organize this, and aimed to give the coach the opportunity to see some new players. As you know, it was designated less than a month before the World Cup qualifiers, so I did not have many options but to work with the players inherited.”
The Unity Cup presented four teams by playing two games each in London, which allowed coach Chelle to try new players and tactics. According to NFF president, the parties provided a clearer image of the potential within the team.
“With what we witness in these two games, we are pleased and excited. We saw hope,” Gusau said.
“I think every Nigerian football lover witnessed what happened in London. He gave us an idea of the hard work that the coach is investing in the construction of a super -eagles team in which we can trust.”
Gusau also confirmed that Super Eagles would proceed to Russia for another internationally friendly friendly, which he thinks will offer more information about emerging players.
“As I mentioned earlier, we are excited. We will do everything necessary to support the coach and ensure that he built a team in which we can have full confidence,” he concluded. “With this foundation, we have hope, and God will see us through.”
While the Super Eagles look towards the World Cup qualifiers, the Unity Cup has fulfilled its purpose as a valuable preparatory platform, aligning with the strategic vision of the NFF for the development of the national team.
